A 65 year old thin male, 5 feet, 11 inches tall and 138 pounds was admitted to Arbor Village on April 30, 2011 with a diagnosis of diabetes, paraplegia and contractures. He has chronic pain with movement and is a two person assist. He is wheelchair/bed bound.
He presented with a long term sacral decub that developed at home. It was a Stage 4 and measured 11x 9w x 1.5d cm with exposed bone. He had an albumin level of 2.4 on a scale of 3.5 – 5.2 and a pre-albumin level of 9 on a scale of 20-40. Prostat was ordered.
He was placed on the Tridien ST 1400 bed on May 15, 2011. He is very resistant to turning, does not eat well and is very non-compliant. Despite of all these attributes, his wound decreases in size from 11 x 9 x 1.5 d cm with exposed bone and serous exudates and black eschar to 5.8 x 3.5 x 1.0 cm; with 80% of granulation. However, he was readmitted to the hospital on 10/28/2011 with his wound measurements at 6.0 x 5.0 x 0.8 cm. Immediately upon return to the bed, his wound began to decrease in size again. On 11/17/11, his wound measured 4.3 x 3.5 x 1.2 cm. His chart continues to report his non-compliance with turning and repositioning. He continues to want to stay in his wheelchair for long periods of time and refuses his pro-stat. Arbor Village truly believes that without the Tridien ST 1400 bed, his wound would not have healed to this point.
